I received my February 2023 Sunshine & Smiles Paper Pumpkin monthly subscription kit yesterday afternoon, and I’m excited to share with you today my first set of alternate projects that I just put together!
This fun kit contained the supplies shown below to make nine cheerful cards (3 of 3 designs).
But I never assemble my kits as is, because I like to share other ways to use those supplies. I like to think outside the box…see what else I can come up with, and create alternate cards, scrapbook pages and more. So today I’m sharing with you…
A tri-fold window card (a fun-fold card)
And how I turned the three different kit cards into eight (more than doubling the cards you can make from the kit contents)
Because my craft studio has been overtaken by tools and supplies for our bathroom remodel project, I haven’t been able to spend time in there and haven’t had a lot of creative time. So I decided to combine two things together: my first set of Paper Pumpkin alternates AND my Wednesday Live Online Paper Crafting Class. What a whirlwind! But oh so fun!!! Normally my Paper Pumpkin alternate videos are pre-recorded so I can edit out mistakes and speed up slow parts. So I had to be pretty organized bringing all of this into a Live recording.
Watch my video first by clicking here to get to get measurements, directions, and tips (or you can just click on this image below if you are already in my blog post). Scroll down to see close-up photos, access the links that I mentioned in my video, and see a list of extra supplies (linked to my online store) that I used to make my creations. Then be sure to visit my blog again soon, because I have many more alternate projects that I’ll be sharing on March 3rd.
Here are the cards the kit instructs how to make. (Click here for a link to Stampin’ Up!’s how-to video to help you assemble these as intended.)
And here are close-up photos of the alternate projects I made and shared in my video. (Remember to watch my video first to get measurements, tips and directions.)

I’ve got three more “outside the box” ideas I created with the January 2023 Key to My Heart Paper Pumpkin to share with you today. Kristin Ayyar shared in the Paper Pumpkin Fan Club on Facebook to use a gold metallic Sharpie® marker to make more of the locks in the kit gold. I loved that idea and even went further and brought in my Cherry Cobbler Blends marker to re-color a couple more. I’ve got that and a couple other clever tips for you today.
This love-themed kit contained the supplies shown below to make nine Valentine cards (3 of 3 kinds).
Here are the cards the kit instructs how to make. (Click here for a link to Stampin’ Up!’s how-to video to help you assemble these as intended.)

Did you get this kit? If not, the refill kit is currently available for active Paper Pumpkin subscribers. Simply activate an account to make your purchase. And then I suggest you keep your account active so you don’t miss out on the next kit. You can find information on this next kit below.
And here are the three projects I’ve got for you today.
Snowman in the Wind Card
We are in the heart of winter here in Minnesota. So I’m still in “snow” mode with my card creations right now. And I saw swirls of wind in the design of this kit card. The punch out piece – the keyhole turned upside-down (popular as a flower vase in many alternates I’m seeing out there – fun, right?!) looked like the base of a snowman to me. So I trimmed that kit card half off, flipped it upside-down, and added it to a Basic White card base.
Measurements for snowman card…
Basic White Cardstock – 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored parallel to the short side at 4-1/4″
Kit card half with white swirl – 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″
Petal Pink Cardstock (You could use the other half of the kit card, but I used cardstock instead to get a deeper black for my stamped sentiment.) – 3″ x 4-1/4″ for the inside and a 3/4″ strip for the sentiment
I made the scarf from two banner pieces from the kit. I snipped off a bit on one of them to make it shorter. This one is tucked behind so it’s okay if that cut isn’t straight. The carrot nose and snowman’s head come from this lock. And I used a sentiment from Go To Greetings stamped with Tuxedo Black ink towards the left on my Petal Pink strip.
To trim my sentiment banner, I used one of the kit banners as a guide.
I curled the end of my sentiment banner, I added the round portion of the trimmed lock to the upside-down keyhole base, and put Dimensionals on the back. (You DO get Dimensionals in this kit, but I have listed them below in case you want to purchase additional ones from the online store.)
The layered banners that make up the scarf are attached with Seal Adhesive where it meets with the neck of the snowman and with a Dimensional to support the portion extended outward. You’ll also notice I used the Bone Folder to curl the end here, too.
After adding all these layers (and the inside layer), I embellished with the carrot nose, eyes and buttons (from the Classic Matte Dots), and sparkly sequins that I glued on here and there.
HeartLock in a Window Card
I didn’t take progression photos when making this card, but hopefully I can explain it well enough.
Measurements for lock in window card…
Fresh Freesia Cardstock – 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored parallel to the short side at 4-1/4″
Kit card half with Fresh Freesia watercolor wash – 3-3/4″ x 5-1/2″
Kit envelope lining – 4-3/16″ x 5-1/2″
Punch the heart from the watercolor wash layer first. Position (without adhering) the watercolor wash layer over the front of the Fresh Freesia card base and trace the heart shape with a pencil. Punch the Fresh Freesia card base. Then glue on the handle of the heart-shaped padlock so it sits as shown in the heart window of the watercolor wash layer.
Trim the “orange” ends off two of the large banner pieces from the kit. Flip them over and stamp the inside and outside sentiments from the kit stamp set using Fresh Freesia ink. (The ink and stamps are found in the full kit. If you did not get this full kit, you could use other stamps you may have on hand. I’ve also added this ink to the products below.)
Adhere the envelope lining to the inside of the card. (It’s a tight fit so be sure the card can close when you are adding this layer, then trim off any excess that might hang beyond the edges.) Add the inside sentiment, and trim off the overhanging portion from the banner. Add a gold key.
Add the outside sentiment to the watercolor wash layer using Dimensionals. Trim off the overhanging portion from the banner. Then connect the watercolor wash layer to the front of the card using Dimensionals. Embellish by gluing on four small gold sequins.
Love Locks on a Fence Scrapbook Page
Locking padlocks on the fences of river bridges is something that many couples in Paris have been doing for years to symbolize their forever commitment to one another. They inscribe their names on the lock, lock it on the bridge, and then throw the key into the river below. So I used the card based from the kit to represent the metal fence so I could have this imagery on this frameable scrapbook page.
Measurements for love locks page…
Cherry Cobbler Cardstock – 12″ x 12″
Fresh Freesia Cardstock – 4-3/4″ x 6-3/4″
Basic Black Cardstock – 5-1/4″ x 7-1/4″
Kit card half with Petal Pink and gold – 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″
Kit card half with just Petal Pink (the other half) – two strips that measure about 1/4″ x 5-1/2″
Kit card half with Fresh Freesia and gold – 4-1/4″ x 5-1/2″
Here is where you can see I used the Cherry Cobbler Dark Blends marker to color my Calypso Coral kit lock and my metallic gold Sharpie® marker to color my Mango Melody kit lock. The gold isn’t as shiny as the keyhole, but it’s gold. And that’s what I wanted.
I cut both printed card base halves in half again (to get 2-3/4″ x 4-1/4″ pieces. Then I lined up the gold grids on each to connect them and make them form 4-1/4″ x 4-1/4″ squares.
The grid may not line up perfectly but as long as the height remains the same with both pairs, it will be fine. And be sure to add the Petal Pink strips, too.
I used a 2″ tall piece of scrap cardstock as a guide so I could attach both of these “fences” 2″ up from the bottom of my Cherry Cobbler Cardstock page base. You’ll want to have a bit of overhang, too.
I trimmed off the overhanging cardstock. Then I repeatedly stamped the words above each fence section. Next I added the photo mat layers in-between with the Fresh Freesia layer on Dimensionals. But watch where you add those Dimensionals. You’ll want to next adhere and tuck the heart (which I simply peeled off of one of the Heart Box pieces).
I added the padlocks with a Dimensional on the bottom end and (after trimming to give the appearance of the lock connecting to the fence) glue at the top.
I then put on the finishing touches…my stamped banner added with Dimensionals, my two “swinging keys”, and some bits from the pink container of For Everything Fancy Sequins. One of the half pearls is in the center of the loops of the keys to give the appearance of the keys hanging on a hook of some sort.

My first set of alternate January 2023 Key to My Heart Paper Pumpkin projects is ready to share! Hopefully you enjoy what I came up with. My favorite is the pendulum card, but the mini album was fun to make too! The simple idea of interlocking the padlocks might inspire those of you that love the kit cards the way they are, but just want to add a “little something.” Then there is the card with the flap door! (I hope that helps with a variation on that cut out card.) AND… I think moms of little kids will appreciate the idea of doubling the treat containers in the coordinating Heart Boxes add-on.
This love-themed kit contained the supplies shown below to make nine Valentine cards (3 of 3 kinds).
But I like to think outside the box and see what else I can come up with. So here are my instructional videos for what I created.

#APaperPumpkinThing Welcome to our monthly APPT blog hop to showcase Paper Pumpkin kit alternate projects! This time we are highlighting the “Good Things Come in Small Packages”Paper Pumpkin kit. Here are the boxes the kit instructs how to make. (Click here for a link to Stampin’ Up!’s how-to video to help you assemble these as intended.)
I’ve already shared some other alternate projects using the contents of this kit on December 3rd.
Three diorama cards & a “made from scratch” envelope
A simple way to turn those 16 boxes into 32 (doubling the kit)
A door hanger pouch
And a card with a gift card pocket
Today I am sharing…
A wedding card
A gift card holder gift tag
AND… a 12×12 scrapbook page
And all of these three items coordinate with each other.
The card is the first one I put together.
I thought it would be fun to use the box base from the kit for a cardstock layer on the card and have ribbons woven through the slots.
My vision came to life and took on the wedding themed look. I had the other half of the blue box left over. So I cleaned up the edges and connected the flaps in the back to form a pocket.
I used the same ribbons to wrap from back to front giving that pocket a little more reinforcement. And I used the Label Me Fancy Punch to make a small hole in the top for the twine. The layering labels, circles, leaves and flowers come from the kit. And so does that light green patterned paper on the card – the box wrap cut into two strips and tucked under the blue layer.
Measurements…
Basic White Cardstock
5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ scored parallel to the short side at 4-1/4″ for the card base
Light green patterned paper (the wrap) from the kit
(2) 1-1/2″ x 5-1/4″ cut from the same 3″ x 5-1/4″ piece
Twine from the kit
15″
Garden Green 3/8″ Ribbon
16″ for the card
10″ for the tag
White Glittered Organdy Ribbon
16″ for the card
10″ for the tag
Most of the products come from the kit, but there are a few extras.
Products I used… See below for a complete list of extra products I used linked to where you can find them in my online store.
The card and tag were so fun to make that I knew my scrapbook page this month had to coordinate as well. But this time I took that extra box half and formed it into a landscape pocket. There are always mementos that can be added to pages surrounding special life moments. And if anything, the key to the honeymoon suite could go there. Right? wink wink
Measurements…
Basic White Cardstock
12″ x 12″
Basic Gray Cardstock

My friend Carol Rosengren is a saint! My December 2022 Paper Pumpkin kits have been sitting at the post office since the 19th. So I put the word out to my fellow demonstrator friends, and she said she could help by loaning me her kit. PLUS…she even drove it over to me two nights ago when we had a snow storm! I got straight to business, designed my projects, recorded my video yesterday morning, edited it all by bedtime last night, and now I have everything for my first set of alternate project ideas ready to share with you. Yay!
This “Good Things Come in Small Packages” kit contained the supplies shown below to make sixteen colorful and cheerful gift card holder boxes.
But I never assemble my kits as is, because I like to show subscribers other ways to use those supplies. I like to think outside the box…see what else I can come up with, and create alternate cards, scrapbook pages and more. So today I’m sharing with you…
Three diorama cards & a “made from scratch” envelope
A simple way to turn those 16 boxes into 32 (doubling the kit)
A door hanger pouch
And a card with a gift card pocket
Watch my video first by clicking here to get to get measurements, directions, and tips (or you can just click on this image below if you are alreadyin my blog post). Scroll down to see close-up photos, access the links that I mentioned in my video, and see a list of extra supplies (linked to my online store) that I used to make my creations. Then be sure to visit my blog again soon, because I have many more alternate projects that I’ll be sharing on January 6th.
Here are the boxes the kit instructs how to make. (Click here for a link to Stampin’ Up!’s how-to video to help you assemble these as intended.)
