Two weeks ago my family finally made it up to “the lake” where my parents live for our second weekend up north. We had attempted two other weekends after our initial July visit, but each of those were preceded by injuries that cancelled our trips within days of when we were to leave – Nick broke a bone in his finger during gymnastics and I broke a bone in the base of my toe from running into the leg of our new couch (the night before we were to depart).
It was go good to be back, see the fall colors, and of course visit with my parents (and aunt and uncle who have a cabin next door) when we could handle the chilly fall weather and hang out outside together.
Like last time we stayed in the large room above the garage so that we had separate living quarters and could stay socially distant. This is also where my sister’s family and my brother’s family stay on the weekends they come up. So my parents clean and disinfect this room (and the outhouse) between all our visits.
We did all our cooking on the grill. Check out what my husband was wearing in this photo.
Now check out what my boys were wearing. Nick lives in shorts pretty much the whole year. And that’s a strange thing in Minnesota. In fact it got down to around 28 degrees at night that weekend. Brrrr! It was cold enough where we kept the wood stove burning in our garage room non-stop all four days.
We really enjoyed our vacation. The boys played catch with the football a few times. We drove into town for treats at Frontier, a popular store in the closest town. Tim and Nick did a bit of fishing. I enjoyed reading my Outlander book. My parents and my Aunt Jan & Uncle Don met up with us at the local apple orchard one day.
We enjoyed several walks so we could enjoy the fall colors, chat, and give the boys time to run off some energy.
And though the temps were low and the wind was high, we HAD to make s’more’s over an open fire one night, too.
This is their beautiful home from the other side. I took this photo when we were down at the fire pit roasting marshmallows.
I’m taking a bit longer to heal than I had hoped, and it’s slowing me down. But I am going to heed my doctor’s orders that I received a few days ago and stay off my feet as much as I can for the next couple weeks. You may see a slow down or lull in my posts, but I’m trying to put my health first (which is super hard for me since I love creating and sharing so very much). My hope is that this rest will allow me to be back where I was before my injury on August 20th.

Loved this post. Your parents have such a gorgeous log home. We are south of there near London Ontario. Two hours NW of Detroit MI. It was 34F here and frosty this morning and the colours are superb. Lots of maple trees in this area. Heal well and stay safe. Will watch for your posts. Won’t even be if FL this winter so that I can order from you. Border closed for awhile yet we expect.
Maples are amazing in the fall! Good to hear from you Pam. Stay warm this winter. Sorry you won’t be able to “winter” in Florida. this pandemic is really turning the world so topsy turvy. Crazy how a microscopic organism can affect so much, right?
Oh just love your beautiful pictures of your parents home. I love the fall best of all. I am in CA and grew up in a small mining town and miss the mountains. My husband and his family are from Motley, Minnesota. Go Vikings! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Nancy. Yes,…fall is definitely a beautiful time of year. This weekend they got snow. So it looks like winter up there.
Rachel….you need to take care of YOUR body first…Listen to your body…so glad you got to enjoy and refresh with this mini retreat.
? Thanks Marge.
