We had a much needed family vacation this weekend.
Our first trip away from home together in this crazy year of 2020 was this past weekend at Caribou Lake, my mom and dad’s, Grandma & Grandpa Tessman’s lake home up in northern Minnesota. They converted the large room above the garage into a make-shift bed & breakfast.
They added a larger refrigerator, a griddle, a toaster, a few other appliances, dishes and a dish-washing set up.
We had access to the grill, the fire pit, the outhouse, the hose, and the lake for bathing. My family, my sister’s family and my brother’s family are now taking turns coming here to visit Grandma and Grandpa, stay “socially distanced” and not enter their home/the cabin, and enjoy time away on vacation at the lake.
We pulled in on Friday around noon after nearly a 4-hour drive, and I was so overjoyed to see my parents in person that I started crying. I had no clue I was going to react with such emotion. We’ve connected with them via Zoom and Facetime over the last four months. But it’s just not the same as seeing them in person.
This is their beautiful log home from the front. (For those of you who have followed my blog posts for awhile, you may notice they’ve added grass! My dad is also keeping himself busy by doing other landscaping projects.)
This is the lakeside view on the back. You can see it’s quite larger than it appears from the front.
We could cook our meals on the grill and then enjoy our dinners together – my parents sitting on that upper deck attached to the house and us on this lower deck.
Most of our activities involved being on the water. Nick (14-3/4), Luke (13-1/2), and I went down to the dock right away the first day and had fun on the paddle boards. I got in on their battles, too! But they were kind when they pushed me off into the water…no injuries for this 50+ year old! Yay!
When my husband, Tim was done napping, we launched our new boat in the water! Yep…we just bought a used boat the weekend before and took it out for the first time this weekend! It’s our fun, new COVID-19 Summer 2020 toy.
Tim and Nick fished a bit that afternoon. And later in the evening after dinner and visiting some more, Luke and I joined in and Nick drove all four of us around the lake.
Saturday started out rainy. I got drenched just using the outhouse in the morning. The rain didn’t last long, but it remained humid, cloudy and warm the rest of the day. It was swimming/bathing time after breakfast. We went into town for ice cream after that. And after lunch, Luke and Tim went on a hike while Nick and I went back into town so Nick could practice a bit of driving in a church parking lot. They are growing up!!
That evening after dinner and visiting on the deck again, Tim and the boys all went fishing. We tried to start the campfire that night, but we couldn’t even ignite the paper because of the humidity.
Nick and I decided to end the evening on a good note, though. So we got on our suits and went down to the dock for a night swim. It was quick because of the mosquitos buzzing our heads, but it was refreshing and it cooled us off.
Sunday proved to bring the best weather. So we did as much as we could to enjoy the outdoors: tubing, a bit of swimming, fishing and a successful but quick campfire to roast marshmallows and enjoy s’mores. (The mosquitos were thick once it got dark out.)
It was sad to say good-bye. But we have one more weekend on the calendar reserved. Grandma and Grandpa helped us get our boat back out of the water by coaching Tim and I from afar.
We were on the road by 11:30ish, and we arrived home a little over an hour ago. (I wrote most of this post while we were driving home.)
We haven’t figured out how to safely visit my husband’s mom (Grandma Jandro) and his side of the family during this darn pandemic yet. They live a good distance away as well (a few hours in the opposite direction). But there is no way to spend time with them unless we want to risk sharing germs. Anyone have an RV they want to sell us for cheap!? Hahaha!
I hope you are all staying safe, happy, healthy and sane.
