I don't get up there every year for my birthday, but this year I was lucky to again spend several days at my favorite place on earth…the lake.
My parents bought the land on this beautiful lake when I was 5 years old. Our family started out by just camping on the property in our 2-room tent practically every weekend several summers in a row. (Great memories! I especially loved it when my dad would do shadow puppets just before bed…after killing all the mosquitoes in the tent, of course.) My dad eventually built a basement level cabin on the land in the side of a hill – the front part facing the lake was completely above the earth, the back was almost completely under earth. (We'd go to the back at the top of the hill and climb the slanted roof, lay down on our backs, and look at the stars at night during those years.) When I was in my late 20's, Dad dropped the roof and starting building more levels. Finally in the fall of 2016, my mom and dad retired and moved up there after their log home was finally finished.
And that's where I took my boys (and their friend Carter) August 12-16. The boys had a blast catching frogs…
…and fish. They loved showing off their catches, but they also released them back into their environments so gently. (I'm a proud mama!)
This was a fish that my dad caught, but Nick was too excited NOT to be the one holding it.
I had a lot of time to relax. And the weather was pretty awesome, so I was able to relax on the dock while the boys were swimming quite a bit.
My husband Tim stayed at home. He couldn't take more days off since we had already used up many of his vacation days in June and July. He painted the living room though! Yay, Tim!)
When we came home Wednesday night, I found a bunch of mail waiting for me…a big pile of birthday cards! Yay!
